Waka Experience

Waka Experience has been developed to offer a unique cultural and sailing experience across Hawke's Bay.  Waka Experience is suitable for organisations including schools, youth, iwi, community, corporate groups and visitors to the Hawke's Bay.

About Us

Te Matau a Māui Voyaging Trust was formed in 2013. Our vision is to develop, educate, and promote all aspects of waka voyaging within Aotearoa, Ngāti Kahungunu and the Hawke’s Bay community so that the knowledge is passed on to future generations.

The Trust operate Te Matau a Māui - a waka hourua (traditional double hulled sailing vessel) which is permanently berthed in the Ahuriri Harbour, Napier.

Education & Community

We work closely with primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and community groups in the Hawke’s Bay area. Waka Experience aims to have contact with learners so they become familiar with waka sailing and water safety, while gaining cultural and historical knowledge of the Hawke’s Bay area.

Visitors & Corporate

Team building sessions, corporate events, and visitor sailings across Hawke Bay.  Waka Experience offers a wide range of informed and unique cultural sojourns into the history of the Hawke’s Bay area and Polynesian Voyaging.
